On our walks to the mailbox, the neighbor’s cat, Callie, comes out to greet us with a meow. I respond in kind.
Callie often accompanies us the rest of the way to the mailbox, but today, she stopped short.
“You coming, Kitty?” Joe asked.
She merely looked at him.
“Mom, ask Kitty if coming,” he said in his sweet two-year-old way.
And because I speak Cat. Obviously.
What’s a mom to do? I turned to Callie and said, “Meow. Meow. Meow meow?”
Here was her response:
Maybe it’s my accent. I was taught by a Siamese.
“What she say?” Joe asked.
I looked back at Callie as I kept walking. She laid down, eyelids drooping.
“She said she’ll wait for us here,” I told him.
“Oh, okay.”
Problem solved. Mom’s still a superhero.
That is awesome. So cute and funny. š Thanks for sharing, Uberfrau.

Aw. I really do need to know why s/he wouldn’t finish the walk. My dog does that at times and you might have some suggestions.

Probably need Julie Holmes to answer that. She’s a cat owner. I suspect cats just do what they want or don’t want and humans deal with it. Dogs are a different animal. (literal and figurative)

Even though Betsy doesn’t own a cat (Yet!) I think she’s right. Cats do what they want regardless of what anyone else thinks. Zoey loves to take over my chair when I get up, then she has the audacity to be peeved when I return to reclaim my spot. š

Great one! I suspect Joe will learn Catlish, get in the habit of leaving the front door open, and bring his cat friends home for playdates. He’ll be the youngest cat whisperer around š

You speak the truth, Julie. The other day we had to keep chasing Panther back outside. I hope to post about that little adventure too. š

What a cute glimpse of a two-year-old’s perception of the world. Why wouldn’t we speak “cat” among other wondrous things? I love the way kids are open to possibility. š

Callie’s expression tells me that you owe her an apology.

Another commenter pointed out my misstep. I did insult her. I need to take a Cat refresher course.

Yes. Mrow. Oops! So sorry! I meant to say “Mew.”

Yeah, it’s the accent. You should have said, “Meow, Me, Meow, Meoow.” Of course it’s possible that Callie was just tired – must be a long way to the mailbox.

No WONDER she looked at me like that, Andrew! I totally insulted her! I should’ve put you on speed dial so you could do the talking for me. Next time.
