Amazing things afoot

Standard

I didn’t mean to make a pun there, leading you to believe this was yet ANOTHER foot post. It’s not, promise. I’ll only say that the foot’s improving, and that it reminded me to post this comment from Stuart some time ago:

Congrats on the foot! Getting better, one step at a time, I see! Looks like everything’s going tibia okay! Can’t wait to see you fully heel.

I’m sorry I just couldn’t help it. I guess I better leg it now.

He may have heard me groaning all the way out in Malaysia.

Nope, it’s something else even MORE amazing than puns, if you can believe it.

Hubby and I went to bar trivia with some friends last night. Beforehand, I thought it would be so great if there was a question that was perfectly tailored for me. I was thinking along the lines of: Who is the song “Dirty Frank” about (Jeffrey Dahmer, btw), or something involving the name Mookie Blaylock, as examples of something truly random that only I, being the freak that I am, would know.

Then a question began: “Which band’s 1991 album…”

I gripped by friend’s arm. “Oh my gosh!” I said.

“Was named for the jersey number of Mookie Blaylock?”

I literally screamed, not loudly, but enough that people at the closest two tables looked.

A bit later, the guy running the game came over, seeing as how our answer got turned in via phone so quickly. “You know this one, huh?”

“This is my band!!” I threw my arms up in triumph.

“No one else has gotten it yet.”

Turns out, however, those two tables nearby also got it. I didn’t shout the answer, but the song the guy played, “Even Flow,” as the interlude while people discussed possible answers, was not only by the band, but from the album in question. Onlookers may have pieced that together by the way I was dancing in my seat. [Dang it.]

Album cover for Pearl Jam’s “Ten.”

Still, I just couldn’t get over it. It was too amazing. I texted a friend who knows what a nutter I am. She responded: “Almost doesn’t seem fair.”

How crazy and amazing is that?!

In the end, we came in 2nd place out of 13 teams. We would have lagged in 3rd, as we had been prior to the final question, if Hubby hadn’t pulled out of his brain, almost at the last second, that W on the periodic table stood for Tungsten.

Tungsten!

Our prize was a gift card to the brewery, which happens to be our favorite, so we can go back and play again another night.

Anything amazing or trivial happen to you lately?

  1. For the record, I knew the answer long before scrolling down. That probably doesn’t surprise you.

And we just happen to be going out to bar trivia tonight. We noticed last time that the interlude music often β€” but not always β€” provided a clue to the answer. You can bet we’ll be paying close attention to the music tonight whenever we’re stumped or ready to second-guess ourselves.

Guess I’m not the sole punster on your blogroll. Toes-totally understandable.

  2. I love it! And your last question could not be more perfect!! Ha, ha, ha!

But I have nothing as amazing and trivial as your night out – that is so fun!! Congrats on #2 – and the opportunity to do it all again. And I love Stuart’s puns – he nailed it!

  3. First, who is Mookie Blaylock?
Second I’m impressed with the amount of trivia you have in your brain.
Third, somebody cheated if you came in second.

Finally, “brewery” implies you’re drinking beer instead of the true and noble Gin and Tonic … sigh …

    • 1. A basketball player. Never heard of him before PJ fanaticism came upon me.
      2. I have very little trivia in my brain, but a lot that’s trivial.
      3. The group of six older people got a well-deserved win. They were very sweet. We chatted after. πŸ™‚
      4. Yes, fruity beers. πŸ˜› But my mom would agree with your assessment and disappointment. I feel ashamed. [hanging my head]

  4. “Amazing Things Afoot” could be the new and awesome title of your blog, Betsy. The phrase captivated me (though I confess I was looking for an update on THE foot…) Anyway, so here’s amazing and trivial all in one. My credit card bill for this month (in several thousands of dollars but I won’t say exactly how many) was within ONE DOLLAR of the same bill from last month. Kind of jaw-dropping, right? There HAS to be a hidden meaning there but darned if I know what. Kind of like when the cashier rings you up and it’s an exact dollar amount – something with a couple of zeroes after the decimal point. Maybe the moon will be blue tonight…

    • Crazy! And I totally know what you mean about the exact dollar amount at the store. That’s happened a couple of times to me, and I’ve been like, “What?! Are you sure?!” It just doesn’t seem possible. In your case with the credit card, maybe you’re a very consistent spender month to month?? πŸ™‚

“Amazing Things Afoot”–Ha! I just wrote the first thing that came to mind. Glad you enjoyed it, Dave. πŸ™‚ And, yes, eventually I’ll have an update about THE foot. πŸ˜›

    • Ha! We realized we need someone who knows sports. We were miserable at the sports questions. I realize that’s probably not you, but, you know, if you happen to be good at sports trivia, people should pay you to join their teams! πŸ™‚

  5. Wow I wonder who comes up with these terrible puns. You gotta put your foot down and ban puns completely πŸ˜›

I’ve always dreamed about being Quote Of The Day, so thanks for the feature, Betsy!

    • It’s the absolute one thing I know lots about. Normally, that would be completely useless knowledge, but! What do you know?!

Oh! Oh! But if there was a question about TKD or JJ, I might be in luck. Something to hope for when I go back! πŸ™‚

  6. You and your hubby sound like a force to be reckoned with. I can never remember song names and Tungsten, really! I’m impressed. The only recent amazing thing was I decided to watch the original UFC fight from 1980 (the first one ever!) Watching a Gracie fight a Sumo wrestler…a-m-a-z-i-n-g!!

    • Wow, you watched the first UFC? Go you! You’re a more devoted Gracie fan than I am then! I have only heard stories of those early days and the growing Gracie fame. I do know that the move Kimura (my favorite/specialty) is named after someone by that name who broke a Gracie’s arm, twice. Rather than be embarrassed by it, they learned from it and made that move a part of their curriculum. I think that’s some amazing humility.

      • They were like the movie Blood Sport. Few rules other than no eye gouging. Everyone came with their own martial art…a boxer vs. wrestler, Sumo vs karate etc. You can find matches from it on google with “UFC 1980’s”. And, wow, I didn’t know anyone could beat the Gracie’s.

      • Perhaps somewhat ironically, I don’t enjoy watching people beat each other up! Ach. So weird. Guys would talk about UFC in my class, and I’d just sort of be standing there, clueless. Instructor would mention a name and people would “Ooohhh!!!” or “Ahhhh!!” Again, me, clueless. πŸ˜›

      • I can understand that. For me, the ground fighting isn’t as interesting to watch as the kicking and hitting while on your feet. Or, just the fun of watching a boxer realize what happens when they go against a different discipline.

  7. And you undersold your reaction here a bit. πŸ™‚
What about your double fist pumps in the air? What about your smile from ear to ear and the hammer fists to the table? And the hammer fist that changed at the last second to merely grip my leg in excitement? (Braced myself for impact…that did not come. πŸ™‚
Did I mention the squeal of delight? πŸ™‚ Yea, I think you were stoked!.
On the excited scale, you scored a Ten. Definitely a Ten. πŸ™‚

  8. How exciting was that? We have not played trivia at a bar since the 80’s?? My husband and I are still fans of Trivial Pursuit, so we need to find a place that does trivia night. So fun! I’m impressed with you and Mr. W. Tungsten? That’s amazing!

    P.S. I posted!

  9. Congrats on #2! Hey, placing in bar trivia is awesome (from 13 teams!) I’ve always loved trivia, but not being a bar person, I’ve never had the experience. Instead I watch ‘Jeopardy’ and shout the answers at the contestants when they don’t know it (easy ones–some of those answers are, like, ‘what? who would know that?).

    PS: I like Paul’s fill-in of those pesky details πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Also lovin’ the pun run πŸ™‚

      • Ten had a massive impact to my musical tastes. I can still pick out Eddie Vedder on songs I wasn’t aware he did lol – ex. Watched β€œEat. Pray. Love.” With my wife for the first time Friday, a song in the middle was different but – yeah it was him. Song near the end was more Vedder sounding. πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘ŠπŸ»

      • I like to say that when my big brother handed me the cassette tape of Ten and said, “Listen to this,” it forever changed my life. πŸ˜›

I know “The Long Road” is in that movie. I was pumped when I saw the movie and heard that. Great song. I had to look it up, and I see the other is “Better Days.” Huh. I don’t recall how that one sounds. I’ll have to give it a listen.

Also, how much are you loving getting to say you watched a movie with your WIFE!!! πŸ™‚
