Finally got an MRI. Here’s what I learned + pictures!

Standard

Note: the pics have nothing to do with the story (until the end) but add a little levity, I hope. 🙂

The Saturday after Thanksgiving is an excellent time to get a procedure done. I was worried about finding close parking (wish I had a handicap sticker hanger thingy), or any parking, but the lot was all but empty. Score!

When a technician asked what I had done to my foot, I explained it was a martial arts injury. More details appeared to me needed. “Jiu-jitsu,” I replied. More still. “I sort of bent it backwards toward my leg.” And yet more. “It was a double leg takedown.” For the record, this person did not have the air of someone who does or knows much about martial arts.

Later I overheard this conversation being relayed to another technician who laughed at “double leg takedown.”

Buckling bear up for safety.

I had to leave my knee scooter outside the room and was offered assistance to make it to the table. I declined, thinking, “I don’t need assistance!” hopped my way over, momentarily twisted my good ankle, and yelped when my bad foot hit the floor. Pride goeth before the fall and all that.

The technician offered me a blanket (not needed. The temp was great) and tucked a couple under my legs so there wouldn’t be strain on my knees while my feet were propped in little holsters. My lower back could have used a blanket, as there was space between it and the table, thus putting strain on my tailbone, but you can’t win them all.

That tailbone was a helpful distraction since I wasn’t supposed to move my foot at all, and nothing makes your foot want to twitch like not being able to move it at all.

A gift to my husband from a departing colleague.

The whole thing took 12 minutes, I was told. It seemed to go by fairly quickly, actually.

Amazingly, I got the results Monday afternoon.

A woman from the doctor’s office said my MRI showed “some bone bruising” on my foot and lower leg. When I asked about the ligament, she merely repeated the aforementioned prognosis. I was offered, and accepted, a referral to an orthopedic specialist. Now I’ll have to wait weeks for that to go through, and who knows how much longer before the actual appointment. :/

When you’re out of coffee creamer, vanilla ice cream works great!

Okay, so “bone bruising”? What the heck is that? Dr. Google says it’s just shy of a fracture (good) and takes 2-4 months to heal. (Crud.)

Seeing as how I’ve just begun Month Three and my foot is still swollen, I’m guessing I’m leaning more toward the 4-month end of that timeline.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if it went longer. Sigh.

In the meantime, Facebook has shown three of my Jiu-Jitsu friends earn their fourth stripes. By the time I return, they, and no doubt others, will have tested on to the next class. Will anyone I know be left? I’ll have to break in a whole new batch of dudes who’ll have to get used to a girl busting up their boys’ club.

As least I can be fairly certain Instructor will have my back. Months ago, in the Before time, I came in a bit late. Instructor greeted me, mid-instruction, by doing the whole gangsta/rapper peace sign double tapped to the chest then extended out toward me thing. I cracked up.

No caption needed. Also, you know who you are, he for whom this image is aimed. Also, okay fine, I guess a caption was needed.

As far as Taekwondo goes, I told Sensei:

“This class was supposed to be a bonding thing for the girls and me to do together. Now it’s them (air circle in their general direction) and it’s me (air circle toward me). It’s no longer us (air circle… you get the idea).”

“That’s what you get for cheating,” he said.

“I didn’t cheat in this class,” I replied indignantly.

“No, you cheated on this class.”

Ouch.

The girls test for their brown belts at the end of next month. I’ll just be watching from the back of the room with my foot propped up on a chair. The irony of my earlier joke about stopping at blue because it’s my favorite color…

But the plant on my desk reminds me not to give up hope.

Still growing.
Check out those roots now. I’m going to need to find it a bigger vase.

So there you have it, friends. That’s my “zombie foot” update, as I “affectionately” call my puffy purple appendage. What do you think? And which pic was your fave?

      • I’ve been around! Blogger and WordPress seem to have friendship issues. I had a period of not being able to comment on WordPress blogs, but that has resolved. And there are blogs that never show up in my reader, or that get buried in the wrong* order and I miss. Stop by and see my 1980’s tan.🤓

  1. Wait… what? Capybaras in San Diego? Where?

Oh, man, I’m sorry that you’ll be sitting it out for a while. That sucks, especially having to break in a whole new batch of dudes. They don’t learn well.

Favorite picture? I’m going with the coffee and ice cream… I really thought it was something else and was very relieved.

    • I saw that at the zoo. Or natural history museum. Yeah, I think that was it. I’ve been holding on to these random pics for a rainy blog day for a while.

Dudes don’t learn well. Hahaha. (Laughing, but not arguing with you.)

You thought the coffee and ice cream was something else? Should I ask? I’m a bit scared to know… 😛

  2. First – that little plant is going to need much stronger roots if it’s going to do any Jiu-jitsu … just say’n … I’m thinking a bruised bone isn’t a good thing, but at least you now have a good excuse to sit around, drinking coffee with ice cream in it. If it were me, I’d just dump in a whole scoop and call it a coffee float. If people ask, you just say that your doctor said milk products can help heal the bone and you always do what the doctor says. Of course they’ll start laughing right there and forget about you’re coffee float.

and a final warning – he’s buckling in his bear now, but in 25 years he might be buckling you in …

    • For a moment, I thought you were going to scold me on my poor horticulture skills. You know plants; I’m still shocked this sucker hasn’t kicked the bucket, or vase, yet. It does seem to be getting itself into fine kicking shape. It may earn a belt before I do.

Coffee float! Why is this not being sold at Starbucks, or any coffee shop? Seriously! Andrew, we’re on to something here. Quick, to the workshop to build a lemonade stand-type structure so we can set up shop, catering to adults. This will fund our future morning show! (Have you drawn up the blue prints for the set yet?)

Buckling ME in in 25 years? Let’s try 35-40 there, Andrew. Sheesh. Don’t make me mail my plant to you. 😉

  3. Awww wishing you a speedy recovery!!! It’s hard not to feel left behind but I am sure you will get caught up in no time and hey, beating a few boys doesn’t hurt either 😉

I love you son tucking in his bear 🙂 Charlotte does the same but the vanilla “creamer” is a hoot- I DOO THE SAME!!

    • When I return, all those guys will think “fresh meat,” but when I strap on my belt, they’ll know to watch out…
Assuming I still remember my skills so I don’t get egg on my face.

It was like, “where has this vanilla ‘creamer’ been all my life, and why didn’t I think of this SOONER?!?!” You are clearly ahead of the curve, BB.

  4. You have such a gift for timing, humor and writing, Betsy. It’s a damn shame about the foot but I don’t think anyone could have written a more entertaining and delightful post than you have here. Hoping the foot heals quickly and Sensei gets over the cheating thing. Ouch, indeed!

And I love the picture of Joe buckling the bear! Peace out, my friend!

    • Thank you, Wynne. Always nice to know my writing is appreciated. 🙂 I imagine Sensei was just being clever. Or maybe he’s partially hurt. I don’t know. He seemed his normal self after that. Joe can be such a cutey, which I have to sometimes remind myself of when he’s acting anything but. 😉

  5. I’ve always found ‘bruised bones’ to be a weird picture. But great to know that it’s not serious, even though that’s four months off the mat. I can totally relate to feeling left behind after a hiatus, but hey, it’s a marathon, amirite? And it’s about who’s left, yadda yadda.

Also, describing how you got an injury is always the weirdest thing, especially to doctors who scrunch their faces at the thought of adults wrestling for fun.

One doctor asked me to come clean about how I separated my shoulder, and asked if I was in a fight. I mean, I was. Technically.

And in my recent knee-to-face that required stitches, my doctor was suspicious of my ‘wrestling accident’. Gah.

    • Not in much pain, fortunately. Irritation about how long it takes me to turn around in a hallway on my knee scooter, maybe… 🙂 It will be sort of fun to go back to class looking like a newbie but then be able (hopefully) to show those young dudes a thing or two. I’ll take that as a silver lining and maybe something to look forward to. 😉 Thanks, Jill!

  6. I’ll go with the photo of the little plant, Betsy, which keeps growing despite your implied efforts to kill it. A reflection of your rosy attitude toward your predicament. Puns amidst the pain! I admire that.

    • Implied efforts to kill it. Haha! I’m not trying to kill it, but that usually is the outcome when plants encounter me, making this one all the more remarkable. 🙂 Thanks so much for your kind and thoughtful words, Dave. Appreciated!!!

  7. Stiff puffy and purple after 3 months? You might be a long-hauler, Betsy. I’m glad it’s not broken, but it seems that a visit to the orthopedic specialist is a good idea. Fav pic? Hmmm… vanilla ice cream in coffee. I want some of that!

  8. Aw that really sucks. Missing out on class is not fun. Btw I found a new dojo and tried it last night. They do jiu-jitsu but I’m sticking to krav for now. They do REAL krav. Like, it’s grueling. MY tailbone hurts SO bad AND my back too because their mat is SO UNCOMFORTABLE. Have to get used to that. It’s really small but I like it.
Also that coffee float looks literally amazing…I cannot drink coffee though, like half a cup and I’m wired and crazy for the rest of the day.
Oh speaking of injuries my wrist has hurt for literally almost a month and it hurts a lot today after punching last night I don’t know what to do lol but your foot sounds horrible like GET BETTER SOON OR ELSE I WILL COME KRAV YOU AND MAKE IT BETTER

  9. Yay on finding a new place! Boo on the hard mat. Ugh. I went to a place like that and my shoulders were torn up afterward. So unpleasant. I hope you are able to get used to it and are happy there! 🙂
I used to be wired from half a cup of coffee too. Ah, those were the days. Now I sometimes drink two just for the taste of it and feel nothing.
Do you have a wrist brace? I had one for some carpal tunnel-y issues. Maybe that would help? Or tape it at least? That would make you look tough, too. 😉
PLEASE DON’T KRAV ME TO MAKE MY FOOT BETTER! I’M WORKING ON IT! I SWEAR! 😉

      • Eew to the messed up feet, says the woman with a messed up foot. But still, having the bottom of your feet shaved off by a mat sounds seriously unpleasant. (I’m just assuming it’s that bad. I have a vivid imagination.)

I built my tolerance for coffee. That’s all there was to it. I used to drink decaf, then caf, then more caf. You just get used to it. Like your feet will with that mat, apparently. 🙂

Yeah, maybe just wear the brace outside of class, like at home only, to give yourself a break? Or rather, not break it? 😉

I’m trying hard! I’m trying! Please don’t hurt me with your raw scraped up feet! 😉

  10. I’m so sorry you got hurt! That stinks that you have to wait for whole ‘nother group in Jiu Jitsu. Were you doing martial arts at another studio though? I didn’t get the “cheating on this class” comment. (ps-fav pic is the coffee…you gotta do what you gotta do)

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yes, I do Taekwondo with my girls. Sensei only found out I was “cheating” on him with Jiu-Jitsu (a secret I was trying to hide) when I hurt myself in Jiu-Jitsu, hence the comment. :/
Oh, yeah. I was so relieved to have found that ice cream. I can’t do coffee black. Having no creamer takes the fun out of it. 🙂

  11. 12 minutes for a MRI?!! That is fast. When I’ve had them years ago it was closer to an hour. What is the modern world coming to? I like the photo of the plant on your desk that represents hope. Which I hope means you won’t be hopping around much longer.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Ah, AB, nice job with the word play. 🙂
12 minutes probably makes sense when you consider it’s just… a foot. 😛 I would imagine larger areas of the body would take much longer. So, I was fortunate, I guess.

It was interesting to just have to lie there with nothing to do, nothing to look at except the monitor with my name and age and procedure, no music to listen to… Just me and my thoughts. Probably super difficult for a Millennial to endure.

Should I ask what you had to have an MRI for, or should I not? On the one hand, that’s personal information. On the other, rude of me to ignore your comment as though I care little about your personal health while expecting my readers to care about mine?! So, your call on that. I care, but respectfully. 🙂

  12. I love all of the pictures, but the plant is my favorite. It snowed recently, and I’m starved for green things. So glad you know what the diagnosis is for your foot–hoping you get an unexpected early appointment for the specialist! 🙂

  13. Favorite picture – of course, the little guy with the bear! Your picture of the coffee with ice cream I confess I found icky (is that a word). I will NOT be putting ice cream in my coffee any time soon. So sorry you are still on the bench. Praying you heal fast.
