The universe strikes another blow

The universe strikes another blow

I thought I’d finally gotten a leg up. (Man, these Jiu-Jitsu puns are writing themselves!) I went to another Saturday class, did as a BBB advised, and just inserted myself in with the guys.

“Mind if I squeeze in here?” I asked two stretching against the wall.

“Oh, sure,” one said and scooched over a bit.

Seeing these same guys two weeks in a row helps, I think. They’re hopefully getting more used to the Girl in their Midst. (In case you’re unsure, yes, I was going for a Gorilla in the Mist thing there.)

One guy I recognized from the previous Saturday was assigned to me by Instructor, so he had no choice but to partner with me. That was basically fine. Then, just like last Saturday, Lopez showed up late. I don’t know if he was told to, or if he jumped in with me on his own, but my previous partner melted in to a group elsewhere without a word. Maybe with a breath of relief? Who knows.

Lopez, as I’ve mentioned, is great. I was happy to show off my white stripe. “Hey, great! Congratulations,” he said, and the rest of the class passed without incident.

Then Monday’s daytime class was mysteriously canceled. I tried to make it to the evening class, but I just couldn’t swing it. (Eh, maybe a pseudo-pun. That seems more appropriate for a Taekwondo post.)

Then this morning I checked the course calendar and discovered this:

Gracie Combatives March calendar. Notice anything missing?

Where was my 11:00???

I texted Instructor.

“Maybe,” he says. “MAYBE?!”

Turns out, it was not a maybe. It was a definitely.

Despite that blow, I had a great class with just the two of us. He then asked if I wanted to suspend my membership, but I do not. I’m going to try for the night classes, and maybe I’ll manage the 6 a.m. He goes to bed at 10:30 and gets up at 4:30. Six hours of sleep? Eww. “It’s hard the first couple of days,” he said, “but you get used to it.” Hmmph.

We also chatted about the oranges from our tree, which I brought him, (“It’s not a bribe,” I said. I mean, unless that would work to keep my class. They are the best oranges on the planet.) our families, this and that, and whatever–another thing I’ll miss from these small classes. When there are a ton of students, shooting the breeze before class is not a thing.

My potential salvation comes in the form of none other than Lopez, who is training to become an instructor himself. He may practice his teaching skills by opening some classes of his own. Sad thing is, Instructor would not be there. He is the best. But Lopez is a close second. I’m really hoping that will come to fruition and I won’t be seeing any more of this:

An empty gym. In case you’re wondering, the balls are for dodge ball in the kids’ classes. I witnessed this once. Man, those kids have a blast. 🙂

Also, one of our chickens died today. Probably egg bound and all backed up, the poor thing. So there’s yet another blow. (Though I know one of you is thinking, “Good riddance.” 😉 )

Now the score is more like:

Betsy: 2 (I did manage to eek out a few more day classes and earn my stripe); however, Universe: 4ish, 5?

What do you think, BBBs? Set my alarm for 5? Push harder to get to the night classes? It was dumb to get chickens in the first place? Well, maybe, but they’re a good experience for the kids. Also, fresh eggs, like our oranges, are the best.

Thanks for reading! 🙂

  1. I am so sorry about the chicken. I’m sure you grew attached (as I would).

I’m also sorry about your Monday class, but I think you can pull it off. I get up at 5:15 a.m. on the mornings when I jog. Lately, that’s been a lot more miss than hit because it’s hard dragging myself out of bed, but I hope to re-establish my regular routine soon. Of course, I’m also in bed by 9-9:30, so there is that. 😉

    • I wonder if Daylight Savings beginning will be a boost to my morning daylight? I can never remember how that works. Who knows, maybe I’ll enjoy early mornings? I suppose it’s possible. Still scary, though.

Yes, I’m sad about the chicken. Not looking forward to telling little Joe about it. He likes to count them, so he’ll notice. :/

      • It will be rough for him.
And I hate to tell you, but when we “spring forward” we lose an hour’s sleep. I’m not looking forward to that, but I’m hoping spring weather will be invigorating enough to make up for it!

  2. I’d try to get TPTB to offer a class when you want it. I don’t know that you’ll be successful, but you can try– then feel good about yourself for making the effort. I’m sorry about your chicken, may she Rest In Peace. [And there’s a sentence I never would have thought I’d write today…]

  3. I think, just a suggestion, you shouldn’t rule out going to a morning class until you try it. And by morning, yes I mean 6 am. Who knows? You might thrive getting up early, doing something you enjoy, get in a work out and the rest of the day is for the family. Same goes for the evening class. Give it a try. SPend all day doing for your family. Taken an hour or two once or twice a week and do something you really enjoy. See how the family does on either schedule. You might be surprised at how well one or the other works. Good luck. Hard decisions, I know.

  4. Sounds like the Monday classes were popular from your previous posts (and from having to squeeze in 🙂 ). If there’s an option to resurrect them, why not try that first? And if in need of moral support, I can pull a Chuck-Noriss-ism to help… 🙂

  5. I’m so sorry to hear about the chicken. As for getting up with the chickens, I’ve been doing it for years. I’m up at 3:30 every morning except the weekend I’m up at six. You can do it! You’re a spring chick!🐣

  6. I was a morning person once, but I gave it up for lent one year and never went back.

Have you considered teaching your chickens ju-jitsu? Maybe they could be in Lopez’s class with you … if I come up with any other non-six am ideas, I’ll let you know.

  7. Awww, firstly so sorry for your chicken! Poor thing! Lived a good life I bet though (well, until the death part but you know what I mean). Also, they keep taking away the classes! Who leaves 6am and 6:30pm as options?? One is practically Satan’s hour and the other is dinner time!

I honestly am not a morning person but I kind of am… I hate getting up early in the morning BUT when I used to work out (operative word being “used to”) I would wake up early to go to the gym because I couldn’t fathom doing so at the end of a long hard day… … and I heard somewhere you never regret a workout… so now jiu-jitsu and working out are a bit different, I think you could feel some sort of accomplishment at 7am which could propel you through the day with giddiness! 🙂

    • BB, you are a treasure. “Satan’s hour.” Haha. Love it. You’re right. It’s hard to imagine I would regret the workout. Until maybe 2:00 pm when I’d be ready for bed. The springing forward this weekend isn’t doing me any favors. 😒

  8. “Egg bound and all backed up” is that farmer talk???
Those are lousy class time choices. I’m assuming 6 pm is too difficult with kids and dinner? Plus, one likes to see their spouse!

  9. I couldn’t do morning, or evening. Mid-day–perfect! But that won’t work. Hmm… You once said “The pain in my foot is not as bad as the pain of not coming to class.” I don’t know if that helps at all…

I love Gorillas in the Mist…

    • Thank you for appreciating the Gorillas in the Mist reference, Jacqui. And, that totally tracks that you would love that movie, being an anthropology buff. 🙂

I don’t mind the 6:30 pm class. In fact, I went to it last night, but the fallout on the rest of my family could be too great a price. Even the 6 am class will have repercussions on them (like if later I’m tired and crabby). I’m still trying to figure it all out. Hubby would probably like me to just quit, but I’m not viewing that as an option yet.

  10. The only thing I would get up early for is childbirth. To exercise? No way. Doesn’t hubby have black belt? Can’t you spar and entertain the kiddies at same time?

  11. Don’t get me wrong: I can’t wait to put your face on my arm, but if some of your amazing oranges had found their way into my mailbox instead of (or, okay, alongside) the Betsy tattoo, I would have literally jumped for joy.

Trust me. That’s a sight to behold.

P.S. Set your alarm for 5 a.m. If I can do it, you can, too.

    • NOW you tell me. I could mail some, but the shipping would probably be ridiculous. And if you did jump for joy, that would need to be gotten on video for sure.

Here’s the issue with me converting to mornings: I’d lose my nights with Hubby. No more having a drink and a snack while we watch our shows together in the evening. No more exercising together.
No more going to bed at the same time. We might become ships passing, and that’s no good. I could not fully convert but just get up early those two days—and I’m willing to try it, but I fear my body won’t know WHAT’s going on. It could also make
me crabby and impatient with my family. I’m rather torn. I went to the evening class, and there were some downsides, but what I’m saying in this comment should probably go in a post. Stay tuned.

And remember, no defiling my face by exposing it to country music! If it even sees a smidge of line dancing, we’re through!

  12. So sorry to hear about the poor little chicken, Betsy. 😦 That’s too bad.
I’ll bet you can make the early class, though it will take some getting used to. I get up at 4 AM every day, so I can get 8 hours of writing in by noon! If you get up at 4:00, 6:00 will feel like mid-morning!
