Here’s a friend of mine, feeling rather low due to the cold gloomy weather and feeling trapped inside.
Then she got a therapy lamp! Behold the transformation!
It even took YEARS off her appearance!
Uh-oh. Maybe she spent a little TOO much time in front of her new miracle lamp.
Special thanks to the ever clever and hilarious B for sending me these pics.
Now I know I promised no JJ talk in my next post, but here’s just a little smidge of something.
At the end of Monday’s class, we did Musical Chairs-style “combat” where we took turns with our opponent doing the standing or ground defenses, switching each time the music stopped. The song he chose, by the way, was ACDC’s “Thunderstruck.”
I mean, does it get any better than that?
As it turns out, yes, it does, because the next class was largely devoted to leg sweeps, and who doesn’t love a good leg sweep??
I joked last post about changing the name of my blog to better reflect the topics I currently cover. Mark at Swinged Cat thought it was a great idea and suggested I hold a contest. Not making any promises, but it would be fun to hear your ideas for a new blog name. If you’ve got any, let ’em fly in the comments!
It’s like a commercial.

Totally. I should get royalties.
Always nice to see you stopping by, Larry. 🙂

My name proposal is Life is Funny. The parenting thing is restrictive, and you have way more material than that. The last time I did a leg sweep was when I got into a fire ant nest when I was a teen.

Your name suggestion makes an excellent point, John. I like it!
And, oof! A fire ant nest! You’ve had all sorts of fun childhood experiences, haven’t you? 😛

Yes, indeed. Of course, I don’t think that was the kind of leg sweep you had in mind.

Ha! Well, whatever works when dealing with fire ants, John. I’m not sure even Jiu Jitsu has a truly effective method for subduing those. 😉

Very clever pictures! My blog name idea is The Accidental Rooster.

Hilarious with the sun lamp! And a big yes to leg sweeps. It is one of those defensive techniques we ladies can use–right?

That Swinged Cat fella’s got some great ideas! My vote is Chex and Balances. Incorporates both your love of snack foods and Ju-Jitsu!

The sunlight therapy lamp images were absolutely hysterical. Thanks for the crack up.
Oooh, names for your blog. Here’s a few off the top of my head:
Things Betsy does that no one else would dare
Chex Mix, Chickens, and other Tales
The Un-ordinary Life of Betsy Kerekes
Laugh at the Little Things and you’ll laugh All Day

Weren’t those lamp images the best? I was so impressed with my friend for coming up with that, and grateful she was willing to let me share them here.
I rather like the idea of my life being considered un-ordinary, Peach… Thank you for your suggestions! 🙂

Betsy, how about “Laugh and the world laughs with you.” If you want a shorter one, how about “Laugh Lines.” Your blog makes me smile, with or without JJ references. Keith

Thanks for the suggestions, Keith! I will likely list all ideas in a future post. And I’m glad my blog makes you smile. 🙂

What sweep/s did you work?
I’ll have to ruminate about a blog title, but “All Things Betsy” is the first thing to come to mind.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Gotta know what sweep you were working on!
Only thing coming to mind is “All Things Betsy” but it only took me four iterations over the years to get to the current title I have, so take the ATB with a grain of salt. Unless I struck gold, then by all means take it. lol

“All Things Betsy” would certainly cover it! 😛 I’ll do a post laying out all the suggestions, so we’ll see what “the masses” like.
Hook Sweeps and the Guillotine Defense! 🙂 🙂

Those are what they’re called at Gracie Univ. Do those terms translate across all JJ?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Sorry about the duplicate comments, lol. 🤦🏼♂️
By and large, most techniques are translatable across JJ but some have multiple names or they get “reinvented” magically with a new name.

So you know which ones I’m referring to? I’ve gotta start trying to remember what they’re all called. I had to look at the schedule in order to answer you.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah, for the most part. There’s so many techniques that some, like the hook sweep from open guard, that you can forget the name. Plus there are variations, depending on the lineage, that are good or better, depending on the situation.

There is this passage that I maybe don’t have completely memorised but for sure made me pay attention to your blog:
………….
My instructor showed me the basic moves for throwing someone off. “Now you try,” he said.
“I don’t want to do it right now when you’re expecting it,” I said. “I want to try to take you unaware.”
“Well, your attacker isn’t going to–“
Flumph!
I flipped him off mid-sentence.
He chuckled. “Nice job.”*
…………..
So I suggest for your new blog name either Take You Unaware, or Mid-Sentence.
Hihih.
Badass you are.

I’m buying like three of those lamps…
And for a new title? How about “Betsy’s Talk Show”
Just say’n. …
LikeLiked by 2 people
Three lamps! Good call!
Wait, wait, wait, Andrew. I think you’re confused. I’m asking about titles for the BLOG. You’re clearly thinking of the morning show you and I are doing together, which will, of course(!) be called: “Cats, woodworking, and martial arts with A & B.”
LikeLiked by 2 people
Well, once the talk show is going, you can turn the blog over to a staff writer and the publicity department will come up with a good blog name for you.

I like all of that except having a staff writer do my posts for me. That seems sad. But I guess if the talk show is my outlet, it would be okay with it. Talking is faster than typing anyway. And far fewer typos.

I know! If I still lived in OH, I’m sure I would need one. I did recognize that I got gloomy in the winter. A coworker observed that I didn’t say a word to her until after lunch. Once spring hit, I perked right back up again.

Hmm, blog name suggestions? I had a hard time naming my blog. I like some of the other suggestions.
