No cold feet in this house.

Standard

I’m going through my drafts folder, of which I have 22 potential posts. This was the oldest. The daughter I speak of is now 15! This was fun for me to read, as I didn’t remember any of it. So grateful for this blog to store these memories. I hope you enjoy this little tale.

My oldest daughter was two-years-old, I would regularly take a nap on the couch while she played quietly nearby. Yep, you read that correctly. I could nap without fear while my TWO-year-old played. She was certainly something special.

Usually I would sleep with a blanket on me. One day I laid down without first grabbing the blanket. My daughter noticed this and got my blanket for me, spreading it carefully across my body. Another time, the blanket had slipped off my feet, so she replaced it for me.

Perhaps a year or two later, my daughter developed the habit of feeling my feet to see if they were cold. This she learned from me doing it to her and her younger sister. If she deemed my feet were cold, she wordlessly brought me socks.

Now a six-year-old, still concerned with the well-being of my feet, my daughter accidentally stepped on my foot and said, “Your feet are cold, Momma. I’m going to warm them up.” She then pressed her feet on mine to warm them.

I have a set days of the week socks that my two oldest love to wear. At last count, the second oldest managed to get ten on one foot, giving it a severely bloated look. I couldn’t find my socks this morning, and any two will do. It’s rare for me to find a match when they have become such a popular plaything. But my oldest had about five on each foot. When I pointed out that mine were missing, she said, “You can have two of mine,” as she pulled off one from from each foot. “I warmed them up for you.” Indeed, it was like fresh socks from the dryer. Heavenly.

Back to the present, I’m on my own when it comes to finding socks, and those days of the week socks are long gone, which kind of makes me sad. How are you keeping your feet warm now that it’s getting colder? Do you have a favorite pair of socks? Do your socks always match?

  1. Nothing better than nice warm socks. I get thick hiking socks from our local REI (camping gear supplier). Sad that you lost your automatic foot checker.

Actually thick warm socks helped get me through my cancer treatment. People would ask me what I needed and I’d say, “Warm socks.” Sadly the doctor said he couldn’t actually give me a prescription for socks, but he did highly recommend them.

  2. I kind of smile, my son with the covid -19 takes me shopping once a week, last time I told him, I want thick wool socks, found some really nice with dark colors on sale, and I bought a dozen, and and encourage him to buy some, but he refused, then a couple of days later the weather turned cold, calls me and said he should have listen to me!
Its Awful to suffer cold feet when around at the house, and worst to go to bed with them cold!

  3. 💖 💖 💖 your post

I am glad I am not the only one who can forget writing something – or in my case, read with disbelief that I could actually produce such and such. With the passage of time, memory plays tricks on us!

Stories about your children never fail to illicit a giggle, or in this case, warm my heart. They are just sooooo adorable, and kudos to you & your husband for allowing them to be independent & loving on their terms. (eg. I’m pretty sure not all parents, at least in Singapore. would be so relaxed about sock-wearing; I kid you not!)

  4. High-five to a fellow warm sock fan! I just got more pairs of thick wool-blend socks. I have cold feet, like, all the time. The only time I even consider thinking about bare feet (even in flip-flops) is in the hottest part of the summer. On the beach. When the sand is so hot it feels like walking across hot coals (not that I’ve ever done that 🙂 ) In the summer, I usually stick with a pair of cotton socks with those knit slippers. In fall I add a pair of wool-blend socks over the cotton ones. In the winter (in MN mind you) I move up to thermal socks over a pair of wool-blend socks over a pair of cotton socks, all in fuzzy slippers (that are high enough to keep my ankles warm). I even got a new pair of slippers this year becuz slippers with the soles falling off just aren’t as warm. 🙂

I’m pretty sure keeping the house at 66 degrees has nothing to do with it 🙂

Do they match? Yep, but the key to that is having a bunch of pairs all the same color! 😀

    • A bunch of pairs all the same color. Julie, you are a GENIUS! 🙂 And, wow, I have met my match. You are unrivaled in the sock-wearing devotion! 66 degrees reminds me of my house growing up in Ohio. I would wear my winter coat inside and slept with a bathrobe over my pajamas and a sleeping bag on top of all the other blankets. My parents kept the house at 60. Brrr! (This is why God has now brought me to where I live today! I’m owed it! 😉 )

  5. Well my socks almost always match, unless I’m in a grumpy mood and don’t care. But I have a pair of big fat reading socks that I’m getting ready to pull out. It’s still a little too warm here for them, but it’s always good to have them handy. Your kids sound so sweet 🙂

  6. Aww – that was so sweet of your daughter to check if your feet were cold! Bless her!
Also a sufferer of cold feet here and am knitting socks the whole year round to battle that condition! 😂 In winter I also have a hot water bottle tucked under my feet when working at my desk with a blanket thrown above them. Works like magic!

  7. Me and socks? Don’t get me started Betsy. I am a sock around the house lady. I can’t remember the actual name. Something thermal from Mark’s Workwear World. OMGosh, the cutest story. It is almost cool nowadays to not wear matching socks. At least this is what I am told. 🙂

    • I was told it was “in” years ago when my girls wore mismatched socks. I don’t know if the person who told me that was just being nice because I was clearly a mom who SO didn’t have it together. I didn’t care! 🙂 Thanks, E/E!
