The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Standard

Many people are going to be annoyed that this post isn’t about what they think it will be about. Those of you who have been with me a long time already know what it’s going to be about.

Yep, Chex Mix.

The 99c sale was happening, so I hurried on my way, having discovered that my local grocer once again is stocking The Good Stuff: not just any Chex Mix, but Cheddar a.k.a. Heaven in a Bag.

The first day of the sale, I got there too late. Only two Traditional and one Bold were left on the shelf. So I went back two days later and scored this:

basket

Seven bags of Cheddar Chex Mix in all its Golden Glory.

When I got home, I announced, “I return triumphant!” My oldest daughter’s eyes lit up like she’d just witnessed the most amazing magic trick ever.

Youngest Daughter asked, “Did you see that one guy you know there and tell him they needed to refill the shelf?”

I laughed heartily but told her no, the Chex Mix Guy was spared on this visit.

Two of my girls tore into a bag immediately. Within four days, three bags were empty. That’s correct: I’m breeding little Chex Mix monsters.

How much was eaten by me, you ask?

Hardly any. In fact, the stuff tasted oddly stale. My taste buds were not scintillated. I felt nothing. Sadly, I am officially over it. I thought perhaps after such a long absence my enthusiasm would be reignited, but no. Despite all that, I still enjoyed taking this picture to remember my former love by.

CM

Farewell, my beloved snack food. I promise I’ll never forget you!

What’s your binge food? Or former binge food if you’ve experienced a break up?

  1. Oh no! I still love cheddar cheese Chex mix–it really is the good stuff, but now, I’m kind of into the Veggie Stix. They taste like French fries–without having to make them or go through a drive through–they’re just in a bag in the pantry–how easy is that? Plus, they’re supposed to be healthy, but whatever:) Cheers!

  2. Sometimes the best thing is to just move on. True, it’s a sad moment, but best to just to take a deep breath and admit it’s over.

But be comforted in the thought that someday a new snack food will speak to you and fill your taste buds with joy and rapture.

For me it was peppermint lifesavers and I’d buy by the case. Then one day they brought no joy so I bought a bag of Cheetos – heaven in a bag … sorry, got to go to the store …

    • You get it, Andrew. You feel my pain. Thank you for commiserating with me. I’m sure my CM and your peppermint lifesavers can share a drink at a bar together soon, talking about the former loves who have left them behind, just as we, too, feel left behind.
      Sigh…

  3. We are like this about Lay’s Cheddar Cheese chips. I have been eating them every day (unless we can’t find them–you know how that goes) for several years. I’m thinking of trying your Chex Mix, just for a change.

  4. Dot’s Pretzels since moving to South Dakota. That stuff is like crack. I am also a big fan of Cheez-Its and Cosmo’s Creations Sea Salt & Butter popcorn.

Basically, if it’s salty, sign me up.

  5. It’s good to hear that you’re over Chex Mix, Betsy. Variety is the spice of life, so let us know what’s next. 😀 My former binge food: Frosted Flakes. Yum Yum Yum. I don’t eat sugar or wheat anymore, and I don’t miss them. Except for Frosted Flakes!

  6. Sigh, the disappointment & sadness when reality doesn’t sync with the anticipation & memory!

I have to admit that most of our supermarket runs over the last few months always included quite a few bags of potato chips; no run on pasta, noodles or toilet paper for us, but potato chips. Our family favourite is a in-store label of the Fairprice group in Singapore. My current favourite flavour: black pepper. My husband’s & daughters: chilli. The girls also like BBQ (too much like beef for me) and sour cream & onion(I just don’t like this one). So what to do, by the time you get a couple of each, the shopping basket is full!

  7. Hi Betsy, First time I have heard of Chex Mix. I wonder whether it is available in Canada? I suspect I needed to be aware of Part 1 of this story. I think I get it. For me it would be peanut butter cups. Yet, I have a bag of them sitting downstairs untouched for the past 3 months. Until tonight……hopefully they are not stale. 🙂

    • Reese’s peanut butter cups are my husband’s favorite candy. I think for me they’re the second after peanut m&m’s–same concept, more crunch.
Yes, the Chex Mix saga is a long and storied one, with great tales of the famed Chex Mix Guy who has dealt with my obsession for over a year now. Good times! 🙂

  8. Oh I am super glad you have stocked up on your fav binge food! It is really unfortunate how uncertain shopping has become these days. My favorite binge food are potato wedges or any kind of french fries actually.

  9. I used to love granola bars. Any brand. Not necessarily to binge on, but I loved them daily. Then one day, a sad day it was, I realized they tasted like chemicals and salt and rancid sugar. I’ve never gone back to them, feeling my relationship with them is over. Permanently.

    • I can only hope it was somewhat mutual so the granola bars aren’t too broken up about it.

It’s strange how that happens, though, right? Just all of a sudden, our bodies are like, “Nope, never mind. Not today. Not ever.”

  10. Aw, man. That means no more CM posts. I never took to the cheddar CM. Turtle and Trail Mix CM are my faves, but we don’t get them often enough to really get tired of them. One of my fave junk — erm, snack foods is jalapeno cheese-flavored kettle chips. Not too spicy, but with just enough heat. Better than red fingers with Flamin’ hot Cheetos.

And chocolate. Dove dark chocolate sea salt carmel. Or better, Ghirardelli dark chocolate sea salt carmel. And the next time I’m in Salzburg, the REAL Mozart chocolates (because they don’t ship outside of Europe). So. Good.

    • Julie, couldn’t you have told me this BEFORE I went to Salzburg? You mean I’ve missed out on the world’s best chocolate? I haven’t become well-versed enough to tell the difference between Dove or Ghiradelli in a blind taste test, but salted caramel is the way to go. Always. 🙂

So jalapeno cheese-flavored kettle chips, eh? Perhaps I ought to start with those and build my way up to the flamin’ Cheetos. I’m not really one to enjoy my mouth being on fire, but I’m always up for a new adventure. If blogger, Mark, can inspire me to try fried pickles, I can branch out to jalapeno kettle chips too.

No more CM posts. Well, how often have I posted one saying it would be the last? Probably three times now. We’ll see. You just never know when the CM will rear its cheesy orange head again.

  11. Oh no! Poor you! It’s awful when you have a snack breakup. 😂 I loved several (sweet) snacks as a kid and was hugely disappointed when they changed the recipes. Luckily some still taste like back then – yay! 😄

  12. I don’t really binge on anything, but I love ice cream, the creamier the better. I may or may not have a little bit after dinner every night. Especially in the summer…
