I was reading off spelling words to my daughter and asked, “What was the last word I gave you?”
She said, “You gave me grief.”
True story.
Here’s an oldy, but a goody.
With another week of phonics looming, I grabbed the pile of my daughter’s first grade sight words. Here is the pile: On the left is what we’ve done so far. On the right is what we have left to do.
As I picked up the smaller stack to look for next week’s words, these were the three words on top of the pile:
Thank you, homeschooling gods, for the small chuckle. I shall endure for a while longer!
Friday is our official last day of school. We’re celebrating with gelato. Those of you with school-aged kids, how are you celebrating the summer?
LOL! That’s awesome 🙂 School was done for us the last week of May (actually, June 1). Kids are older, so my son has a full-time job for the summer, and my daughter has a job plus tennis all summer. Now, if I could just send the rabbits off somewhere–say, do you need some fuzzy rodents? I know where I can get some super cheap 😀

Awh, wouldn’t it be fun to have bunnies as pets? Although I hear they stink. Maybe you can catch one and eat it as rabbit stew with some of those veggies. 🙂 Our problem out here is gophers. They have seriously dug underneath a lettuce plant and pulled it down into the ground. So, one day, full head of lettuce, next day, nothing but a hole in the ground. And since they burrow underneath the fence, barbed wire does nothing. (Not that we use it.) We’d have to remove all the dirt, put down some subterranean netting, then replace the dirt. Pain!
In other news, I got a request from a small publisher for my full. Not really the route I want to go, but maybe it will be enlightening in some way. Like, if even they don’t like it, maybe it’s just not a good book. 😦 (Although the agent I hired for a developmental edit loved it. Why can’t someone else?)

So those animated cartoons with gophers are based on their actual behavior?! Those cartoonists really did study life — this isn’t my first such realization — and just exaggerated it, such as by speeding action up. But cats can’t light matches, and ducks can’t drive (see Kaz’s “Underworld”).
Anyway, your vocabulary cards clearly are good makings for cartomancy, if you’re into divination.

Definitely not into divination. I’ll pass!

My daughter is celebrating the end of the school year by sending her 15 year out to have two weeks with his grand parents in California.
Wait, that’s me and my wife … OMG, what did we agree to?

Haha. Have fun with a 15 yo boy for two weeks. I hope he likes cats and woodworking. 🙂

He likes cats, but avoids anything with the word, “work” in it.

A message from beyond. My children end school next week. We haven’t talked about how we will celebrate. Though in reality, it is my wife who would plan that sort of thing.

Your wife might be celebrating in her own way, as will your boys. 🙂

“It’s almost over” could go so many ways, couldn’t it? 😄

In my condition right now, true. Three weeks until that other “little” thing happens. At least you can rest assured that any threats I make of “popping over” to see you are truly empty for quite a while. 😉

Hehe, that’s the first thing I thought of for you too when I saw the words “it’s almost over.” Either that or the Cavs losing tonight. 😳 But I hope it’s not that!

As a native Clevelander-ish, I hope it’s not that too. Two weeks ago I gave a brief talk and brought my books in a canvas Cleveland bag that my parents brought and left here. My husband saw it and said, “Just so you know, the California (whatever-it-was. Please fill in the blank if you can.) are playing the Cavs tonight, so you might get some flack for that bag.” No one said a word. It was mostly women in the group. That probably helped. Or they were just so blown away by my presentation, nothing else mattered. 😉

I’m sure it was the latter!

I’d like to think that, anyway. 🙂

Clever! I figure we are in our last two weeks. We are wrapping up a state history unit and reading Peter Pan.

Fun! We just spent an hour outside picnicing and reading one of the Redwall books. Have you come across those, yet? by Brian Jacques? My girls loves them. They’re quite entertaining for me too. 🙂 A smidge on the violent side, but not too bad.

I know a couple of my kids have read those on their own. We also like the Series of Unfortunate Events and The Mysterious Benedict Society.

It’s a wonderful series by Trenton Lee Stewart about four brilliant children who embark on daring adventures to save the world from a powerful villain.

Ooh, sounds good. Thanks. I’ll see if our library has them.

Well, duh, of course you don’t know about the Mysterious Benedict Society, neither do I; what part of “Mysterious” did you not get? Where other books have a copyright page, that one probably has a confidentiality agreement.

Lately I’ve been reading “Contact” by Carl Sagan. A propos kid lit, it occurred to me just a little way in that this is an adult version of a back story dirbbled out in a series of Tom Swift books. I bet it occurred to Dr. Sagan too.

Gelato, yummy! We celebrated by going to the beach (surprise!) and were delighted to find thousands of brand, new baby sand dollars washing ashore – and discovered they can WALK!! Happy end of the school year, Mrs. Betsy!

They can walk?! How delightful! Did you take pictures? That seems like a silly question. Of course you took pictures. Right? RIGHT?! 😉

Actually, I didn’t know they could walk like sea stars even though I saw all the little microscopic tentacles…until I looked beside my beach chair and the one I was babysitting (sanddollarsitting?) was GONE!!

I, unfortunately, missed my eldest’s last official day of school but based on the photos his teacher was sending me those final few days, I’m pretty sure school ended the week before. Now he’s off to visit with his grandparents for a week while we mentally prepare ourselves for the youngest Potts’ preschool graduation. However we celebrate, I’m pretty sure I’ll spend at least a few minutes of the day in tears.

I always adored the last day of school when I was a kid. My mother and I would go to our small town fancy ice cream place. We’d have these little molded frozen ice cream treats that had a couple flavors in each one and were in shapes like flowers or birds. They were cute– and I never see them anywhere anymore. Too much trouble to make, I suppose.

That sounds ideal to me! Although, it also sounds like they’d be too pretty to eat!

They kind of were too pretty to eat, especially when I was a very little girl. However, as I got older I overcame my reluctance and munched them right down. They were tasty!

It’s hard to go wrong with ice cream. Too bad this was before smart phones with cameras. Pictures before consumption would’ve been nice. Unless you actually thought to bring the camera with you to the ice cream shop.

Yes, you’re right. A pic or two would have been nice then, would be nice to have now. I wonder if I can find any old pics online from this little shop? A project [of dubious value]…
