Nightmares of John Wayne

QMNow calm down. I’m not about to insult The Duke. I grew up on John Wayne movies, including this one mentioned in a comment someone kindly left in the Add Your Own Story section of this blog. Check it out:

Last night we finished watching The Quiet Man with John Wayne.

6 Yr old son: Papa, that movie is going to give me nightmares.
Papa: What part?
6 Yr old son: What’s a nightmare?
Papa: Bad dreams that scare you.
6 Yr old son: Never mind… I’ll be okay.

Too cute, right?

I responded to this by thanking the person for evidently thinking of me shortly after it happened. He responded:

Actually we first thought, “We’ve got to tell Betsy something.” Then, since our house is just oozing with comedy, we took the very next thing that left one of our kids’ lips.

Sounds like a happy fun household!

Is anyone being cool enough to share these posts with their friends? You might as well. Everyone needs a good laugh now and then, and your friends deserve one. Don’t you love your friends?!?! 😉

      • and the Shootist, he died there too. I will say that if you made me watch JW movies all day, I’d likely pick “True Grit” first and “Sands of Iwo Jima” second.

      • Ah, yes, the Shootist. I can’t remember Sands of Iwo Jima, but the name is definitely familiar. My dad was one of JW’s biggest fans. I gravitated more toward Jimmy Stewart (bonus if he was in a Hitchcock film) and later on in life, Cary Grant. I got my husband into the classics with Harvey and then Charade.

My oldest , when asked why she hasn’t sent out thank you’s yet to people who donated money for her Stairclimb fundraiser last month, ” I’ve had a tight schedule,” I think she and the nanny went bowling that particular day. ~ FYI I heard on a documentary last month that a young John Wayne got some cowboy acting advise from an aging Wyatt Earp back when Westerns were just starting in Hollywood and Wyatt would be used by studios for some authenticity

  6. I don’t have a favorite JW movie; I don’t make a point to watch them because all his characters seem the same to me. BUT, I really like The Quiet Man, True Grit, and Hellfighters. Confession though: I love Clint Eastwood westerns, even the spaghetti ones 😀

    • Hellfighters–I must admit I don’t know that one! I thought sure my father didn’t let me miss a one. Looks like I have some watching to do. There was a lot of Eastwood watching in our house, too, but somehow I missed those. Maybe I wasn’t allowed to watch them, or maybe I actually had friends to hang out during those years! 🙂
