Lord, let me blend in with the wall!

St. Peter’s Basilica at Early Morning (Photo credit: Wikipedia) P.S. This wasn’t the church I was at!

When my youngest was born, she made her first church appearance just a few days later. Being understandably tired, we didn’t make it to our usual Mass, but went to an 11:00 a.m. at a church I’m not as familiar with. The baby slept wonderfully through Mass until just before the end. When she began to cry, I picked her up and looked around for a private hidey-hole in which to discreetly feed her. Then I spotted a folding  chair in a dark corner, far from any people. Perfect!

A minute later, Mass was over and I soon discovered a crucial architectural structure that I had previously overlooked:I was sitting next to an exit door.

A flood of people came streaming past me. I wasn’t sure whether I should look down and hide my face, or look up and around as though everything was perfectly fine. Since I couldn’t make up my mind, I alternated back and forth.

When the line of people leaving got toward the end, I was looking up, just in time to see the father of one of my husband’s students. He nodded toward me, and said, “How’s it going?” I smiled awkwardly, blushing, and nodded a hello.

In the future I intend to get blueprints in advance of attending any new church.

  1. Breastfeeding is next to Godliness, that’s what I like to say. (Well, I don’t really say that, but I most definitely approve of breastfeeding, and I suspect God would, too. 😉 )

  2. I never understood why breast feeding embarrasses people.. it’s what our breasts are for.. God did not mind… he created them 🙂

All of a sudden, a butterfly show of some sort ended, and a flock of people came my way. Instead of them continuing past me, a small group gathered around my little bench. I thought maybe they wanted to gawk at a mother nursing her young in the wild. Then I realized, not only was I enjoying the shade of the bush, but this ridicously, freakishly large UNCAGED bird was also enjoying the coolness. Right behind me! What kind of zoo keeps large birds behind unsuspecting half de-braed women? Anyway, I was stuck, I was between people and a large bird. I just sat and grinned and nodded the whole time like an idiot, almost acting like I had discovered the whole species myself. Honestly though, your story sounds so much worse. My advice to new mothers: fold a large bird in your diaper bag to pull out after mass.

  3. Yeah you would feel a little awkward although I have no problem with women breastfeeding around me it i s natural and generally you don’t see anything just a baby’s head so why people get embarrassed is beyond me.
