I wanted my 19-month-old to help clean up the toys, so I picked up a block and dropped it in the box. After repeating this several times to demonstrate the concept, I held out a block for her to drop in the box. Instead, she grabbed the block in one hand, and my hand in the other. She put the block back in my hand and had me drop it in the box. Then she took my hand in a firm grip, and made me pick up another block, move it above the box, and drop it. So much for me giving her a task and being able to walk away. She was the crane operator, and I was the crane.
