Who says teaching is easy?

Standard

I was guest teaching a phonics lesson in my child’s kindergarten class when, as luck would have it, that day’s topic was the “uck” family. The objective was for the students to come up with and write down words ending in “uck.” Of course you can see how this went down. As the students dutifully started at the beginning of the alphabet and worked their way to the end, I could be heard saying, “Duck, yes. Very good…No, that’s not a word…NO! NO! That’s not a word, either! Do NOT write that one down! Do not take that home to show your parents! Let’s move on! … Okay, ‘guck.’ Sure, that’s sort of a word….” Claire, mother of 5
